TUCSON CLEAN AND BEAUTIFUL

As part of this program, the League of Mexican American Women has adopted Jacob’s Park, the Nicolas P. Ochoa Soccer Complex, for regular maintenance. LMAW cleans and maintains this park in northwest Tucson. Cleaning is scheduled for the second Saturday of the month. Everyone wishing to participate is more than welcome. Bring your hat and sunscreen and come early to avoid the hot sun, especially the summer months, and join in on the fun! This is one of the projects in which the current Florecitas and Botoncitos can fulfill their community service hours. The League gives a “shout out” to Yasel Bishoff, Chair of the Community Service Committee, and her family for their regular, faithful commitment to this project.

Fiesta de los vaqueros - rodeo parade

The Fiesta de los Vaqueros parade has been part of the City of Tucson’s cultural heritage since 1925, acknowledging the varied ethnic diversity in our community. It is the longest non-motorized parade of the country, This event begins the Rodeo Days of Tucson. The League of Mexican American Women participates by entering a float. The float is colorfully decorated and one of the Florecitas, as our Queen and a Botoncito, as our princess, from the prior year’s Fiesta en Xochimilco, ride on the float. The League has won a prized trophy for its float entry from the Rodeo Committee several years.

Other COMMUNITY EVENTS

LMAW also participates in various community events that are compatible with our mission. The League’s members are regular attendees of the Los Desendientes del Presidio de Tucson annual dinner. In 2017, LMAW was one of the honorees at this dinner. We were awarded a beautiful plaque, recognizing the League’s 50 years (as of 2017) of providing scholarships.

The League of Mexican-American Women was also invited to the annual parade of Founders’ Day of the town of Marana. LMAW entered a float in the parade in which current Florecitas and Botoncitos rode or walked beside it.

Florecitas and Botoncitos also lend their volunteer time to The Ronald McDonald House, taking over the cooking of a meal for the families that are housed there while their children are receiving medical care at a hospital.
