Fiesta en xochimilco
The Fiesta en Xochimilco is a formal ball held each year in September. It is the League of Mexican American-Women’s main fundraiser. In 1970, the presentation of young girls, Florecitas (Spanish for “little flowers”), to the community in a modified version of the traditional Quinceañera, was added to the ball. The Botoncitos (”little flower buds) - younger girls who will be Florecitas the following year - were introduced a year later. Participating as a Florecita with LMAW is an amazingly beautiful experience that promotes culture, heritage, pride, and the importance of being role models, to these young ladies. In preparation for their presentation into society, the girls attend a retreat where they reflect on their spirituality. The girls are also honored with a luncheon, where they and their families are the honored guests. The Florecita presentation, along with a professional photo of all the current florecitas are published in the Celebration section of The Arizona Daily a few weeks before the ball. A beautiful mass of thanksgiving is celebrated for the Florecitas, their parents, family, and friends at St. Augustine Cathedral. The Botoncitos also participate in this mass. It is followed by a formal gala the following Saturday, where parents present their Florecitas.
fashion show
For years, the League has hosted a spring fashion show. Clothing from a local retail store are modeled by members of the LMAW, family, Florecitas, and Botoncitos. This event includes a luncheon, fashion show, and for the first time, vendors who will be selling a variety of items such as jewelry, clothing, and art.
